Institutions for the Field Visits (Friday, August 22)

Day center „Cerību tilts” (eng. „bridge of hope”)
Cerību tilts, Family Support Day Centre. Ieriķu iela 2b.
Clients of this day care center are disabled persons with mental disabilities. The day center was created in year 2003. It is build special for handicapped persons. At the centre 24 clients can stay per day. The centre offers socials care and rehabilitations services for disabled persons during day time, as well offer different leisure time activities options, f.e., stichingt, weaving, knitting, painting, learning.

Center „Dardedze”
Center „Dardedze” is nongovernmental organization established in 2001. The aim of this organization is provide support and help for abbused children and their families. Everybody who feel unsafe and unsecure can receive emotional and social  support from different proffesionals in this center during 24 hours. Center provide consultations and social rehablititation for clients  (parents, children or relatives).
In order to improve personal and professional skills of specialists center realize different seminar and training programs. Center has good cooperation on national and international level in realizing various projects against violence.

NGO „Apeirons”
APEIRONS is an organization of people with disabilities and their friends and as such has been actively operating since 1994. Organization is very actively involved in the process of social integration and are working on implementing the UN guidelines in Latvia thus promoting equal opportunities for the people with disabilities in Latvia. Main goal is the integration of people with disabilities in the society as well as creating more accepting attitude towards them from the general public. In 2004 Apeirons created the “VAR Centre” (Environment, Training and Resources). In Latvian VAR means „can”, because through this centre people with disabilities can find all the necessary information regarding legislative situation, accessible environment, human rights, citizenship, social services etc. VAR’s aim is to increase people with disabilities’ awareness of their rights and to improve the process of integration in the society. In 2000 organization implemented a research about “Human Rights of People with Disabilities in Latvia” and in 2002 they promoted “Monitoring of the social services of the people with disabilities in order to ensure the civil participation”.

Support unit for families with children
in district Bolderaja. Gobas iela 6a.
Social workers working at the unit provide individual consultations, perform negotiations with family, help to find strength to solve problems themselves, supply necessary information, give moral support, help to develop necessary abilities (for solving conflict situations, child upbringing, etc) to improve situation of family life, involve specialists from other institutions to give support for family. Support units co-operate with families the most of them having difficulties in upbringing children, children do not attend school, children do not receive sufficient care, have crisis situations (parents separation, serious disease or even death of near relation, etc), some member of family has suffered from violence, have addiction problems of alcohol, narcotic.

Asylum seekers reception centre “Mucenieki”
in Ropažu pag., 17 km from Riga.
The centre was established at the former military base of Soviet army. Building renovation was completed at the end of 1998. At the centre 200 inhabitants can be housed. The main task of the reception centre is to ensure asylum seekers with inhabitation while their asylum applications are examined and decision made, and to promote their adaptation in Latvian society. Asylum seekers and refugees who have stayed at the centre are coming from the following countries: Afghanistan, Congo (Zaire), Morocco, Armenia, Belarus, Slovakia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Pakistan, Angola, Iraq, Russia, Tajikistan and Nigeria. The biggest number of asylum seekers simultaneously staying at the centre has been 27 persons.
